What is the NMLS?
The Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act of 2008 (S.A.F.E. Act) mandates a federal registry for credit unions and their employees who are mortgage loan originators.
An NMLS Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (and Registry) identification number is simply the unique identifier assigned to every registered Mortgage Loan Officer (MLO) allowing consumers to search for Mortgage Loan Officers by their NMLS Id Number and gain information about that Mortgage Loan Officer.
The NMLS Resource Center is the official gateway into the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System & Registry (NMLS) and provides users with tools, tips, news and updates. The NMLS Federal Registry was created at the direction of federal banking regulators to fulfill the registration requirement of federally chartered or insured institutions and their mortgage loan originators in compliance with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s rules and the Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act (SAFE Act). You can search the NMLS registry to verify a mortgage company or individual by visiting the NMLS Consumer Access web site. You can verify the Sperry Marine Federal Credit Union’s registration at the NMLS Consumer Access web site as well.
